Delving once more into the great cosmic box of “what if?” casting, Jodie Whittaker has revealed that she was up for a role in Matt Smith’s debut season.
In a conversation with The Times Magazine (via Radio Times) Whittaker said she was up for a role in the Eleventh Doctor’s first season but she cannot remember what role she auditioned for.
However, that ambition never went away and when her friend Chris Chibnall was hired as the new Doctor Who showrunner, she quickly gave her old pal a call.
She said:
“Can I come? Can I be an alien? Can I play a baddie?
“He was like ‘It’s funny you bring it up, because actually I wanted to talk to you about whether you would consider auditioning for the Doctor.’”
So everything turned out for the best but it does make you wonder what part she was up for in Matt Smith’s first season: Could it be Olivia Colman’s role in The Eleventh Hour? The vampire queen played by Helen McCrory in The Vampires of Venice? Or the part of Sophie, played by Daisy Haggard, in The Lodger?
You’ll be able to see Jodie Whittaker’s actual role in Doctor Who when the show returns on Sunday 7th October on BBC One.
