Well, who have thought it? Theresa May is a fan of Torchwood!
Yep, you read that right: the UK’s current Prime Minister, Theresa May, the lady who has had lots of airtime on the news over the past year thanks to a little thing known as Brexit, is a secret viewer of Torchwood. It shouldn’t be too shocking because the Queen is a fan of Doctor Who but Torchwood is a pretty niche corner of the Who universe!
Recently, John Barrowman (Captain Jack Harkness) attended a meal at 10 Downing Street to celebrate Burns Night when he discovered the Prime Minister’s love for the show. Barrowman took to Instagram to surprise his followers with the following:
“It was a lovely evening – diverse crowd, lots of music and lots of speeches. And it turns out that the Prime-Minister watched Torchwood! She likes Torchwood, who knew?”
But this isn’t the only thing from the Doctor Who universe that May enjoys; she has stated on a number of occasions that she is a fan of the Christmas Day specials. Notably, May told the Radio Times back in 2016:
“I always like to see Doctor Who on Christmas night, if possible.”
It is quite a strange juxtaposition to enjoy the lighter Doctor Who material and then go into something that could get really dark in the form of Torchwood, although if you’re reading this, you probably enjoy both too.
May had previously declaired her love for the Doctor Who Christmas Specials after Peter Capaldi had appealed to her to use more compassion in future political dealings. Capaldi went on to state that:
“I hope she takes on the message of kindness and tolerance and compassion to heart.”
He then commented that he was very surprised she was so keen on the show…
For all of us fans of Torchwood who are hoping for a revival of the show on television – sorry Big Finish; you’re doing a fantastic job but it would be great for our gang to be back on-screen – it seems we’ve gained a rather powerful ally. Take note, Chibnall!
Let’s all just hope that in the current political climate, Mrs. May doesn’t take too much inspiration from Torchwood. We don’t want a real life Children of Earth on our hands!
