Karen Gillan Joins Marvel's What If…?

It’s been confirmed that Karen Gillan, best known to Doctor Who fans as playing Amy Pond regularly between 2010 and 2012 before a cameo in 2013’s The Time of the Doctor, will return to voice Nebula in the upcoming Marvel series, What If?

The animated series is based on a comic of the same name and looks at potential other realities, subverting events from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The show will run for 23 episodes, one for each movie between Iron Man (2008) and Spider-Man: From From Home (2019) – the latter of which raises some questions given Spidey’s unknown status in the MCU. (The animated TV aspect may mean Marvel’s able to tiptoe around this issue, but we’ll see.)

This includes two instalments of Guardians of the Galaxy, a franchise in which Gillan plays Nebula, daughter of Thanos and who has also appeared in Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Endgame (2019).

Most major stars of the MCU have been confirmed for the Disney+ series, including Toby Jones (Amy’s Choice) as Arnim Zola.

The first episode of What If? will question what might have happened if Peggy Carter (the wonderful Hayley Atwell) had taken the Super Soldier Serum, instead of Steve Rogers (aka, Chris Evans’ Captain America).

Avengers: Endgame is out on DVD and Blu-ray now. It’s really rather wonderful, y’know.
