It wasn’t that long ago when Jamie Mathieson posted the first draft script for Series 8’s Mummy on the Orient Express on his website. But now, he has done the same for Flatline – his second episode for Doctor Who (also, technically, the first script he wrote for the show).
The episode features the Twelfth Doctor (Peter Capaldi) and Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman) going up against the Boneless, 2D-like zombies from another dimension, in Bristol. While the Doctor remains trapped in his shrinking TARDIS, making it a Doctor-lite episode of sorts, Clara takes the helm with his sonic screwdriver and teams up with graffiti artist Rigsy (Joivan Wade), who would later reappear in Series 9’s Face the Raven.
If Flatline‘s first draft isn’t satisfying enough, Mathieson has also shared the shooting scripts for both said episode and Mummy on the Orient Express. Not what I expected at all, but this is a brilliant opportunity to compare and contrast between the drafts and the final cuts.
In the meantime, you can also check out DWM’s brilliant interview with Mathieson, in issue 591, where he discusses both Series 8 episodes, along with Series 9’s The Girl Who Died (co-written with Steven Moffat) and Series 10’s Oxygen. Certainly not ruling out the possibility of him posting early draft scripts for the latter two episodes, at a later date.
Well, I already have my fingers crossed for him to write for Russell T Davies, but who knows?
