Obverse Books Reveals Doctor Who Black Archive 2024/25 Schedule (And a New Series Editor!)

Obverse Books has announced details of its forthcoming Black Archive titles, throughout the coming year.

The Black Archive is a series of monographs examining individual Doctor Who stories, and the 2024 batch includes tales for the First, Tenth, Eleventh, and Thirteenth Doctors — leading up to a celebratory 75th volume planned for 2025.

But first, the series welcomes in a new editor, Kara Dennison, who fills the shoes of Matt West, who’s had to depart The Black Archive, owing to other work commitments. Kara wrote the Black Archive on Heaven Sent, and has further written for several tomes from Obverse and Altrix Books (which she co-founded with Paul Driscoll). Congratulations, Kara!

So what does 2024 have in store for us? Philip Purser-Hallard’s book on Midnight has just been released, and later this month sees Ryan Bradley’s take on the controversial two-parter, Ascension of the Cybermen/ The Timeless Children.

After that, in June, Doris V Sutherland explores 1964’s The Aztecs, while August sees the return of Dale Smith (who previously wrote Archive instalments on The Talons of Weng-Chiang and The Greatest Show in the Galaxy), this time tackling Silence in the Library/ Forest of the Dead. In October, Matthew Kresal (The Silver Archive: Dark Skies) explores the Thirteenth Doctor story, Orphan 55.

December 2024 sees the publication of the first Black Archive Christmas special — A Christmas Carol, written by Jamie Beckwith and Leslie McMurtry.

Then, the 75th Black Archive sees the return of James Cooray Smith, who has previously contributed essays on The Massacre, The Underwater Menace, The Ultimate Foe, and The Night of the Doctor. This celebratory book covers the 25th anniversary serial, Silver Nemesis.

You can purchase the whole Black Archive range — and read previews of the titles — from Obverse Books.
