Bad Wolf’s Jane Tranter Confirms Doctor Who Series 15 Is Currently in Pre-Production

Jane Tranter of Bad Wolf, one of the production companies behind Doctor Who, has confirmed that upcoming spin-off, The War Between The Land And The Sea, is in pre-production — and so is Doctor Who Series 15!

She enthused:

“We announced last week that we’re doing The War Between The Land And The Sea, which is the first time there’s a mini series within the whole universe. So we’re thrilled that the BBC and Disney+ have awarded us that to do. We’re still in the edit, [and] very early days of the edit for Season 2, which obviously won’t go out for another year or so. It’s very exciting. We’re right in the middle of the journey, and it’s very exhilarating.”

The first “mini series within the whole universe” is slightly questionable, given that Torchwood: Children of Earth exists, but let’s put that aside for now. Either way, it’s great to hear Tranter so happy with the franchise.

The War Between The Land And The Sea is set to star Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Russell Tovey, and Jemma Redgrave; though no airdate has been announced, we expect it to screen fairly soon — perhaps late this year or early next.

And while many have debated the success of Doctor Who Series 14, Tranter also said:

“We feel good about the first season [of Doctor Who]. Just as Industry was a really small experiment at the start, I think this new building of the franchise between the BBC and Disney+ — it’s a whole new iteration, and us all coming back all these years later to do it. It was a whole new adventure. We’re really pleased with the show that we’ve made, and that there is a whole new audience being driven to the show who haven’t watched Doctor Who in the past, has been exactly what Russell [T Davies, showrunner] set out to do. So that’s really good.”

This does feel like an added defence against the reports of poor ratings for Ncuti Gatwa’s first season as the Fifteenth Doctor.

Still, we don’t know how many have been watching on the streaming service, Disney+.

The War Between The Land And The Sea is expected to air before Doctor Who Series 15, which is due to screen on BBC1, iPlayer, and Disney+ early in 2025.
