Though it’s not going to be a musical per se, showrunner Russell T Davies has confirmed that an upcoming episode of Doctor Who Series 15 is “packed full of songs.”
When asked what to expect from next year’s run of stories, Davies has said that the season will include more music, presumably from Murray Gold, and teased:
“I can promise you more music! I’m sure many of you are delighted to hear that. There’s more music… It’s not a musical, but there’s an episode that’s packed full of songs. I should say no more, I’ve given away too much.”
We’ve had episodes that are almost musicals before, notably The Rings of Akhaten, and earlier this year, The Devil’s Chord, which took the Fifteenth Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) and Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson) to a 1960s largely devoid of catchy tunes, culminating in a song and dance routine.
The previous Christmas episode, The Church on Ruby Road, also featured a song, with the Doctor and Ruby confronted by baby-eating Goblins and their Goblin King.
It’s pretty clear that Davies likes a song or two!
Viewers have generally been divided about the musical elements, but it appears they’re not going anywhere; in fact, it sounds like we’re to expect even more of them in future.
Doctor Who Series 15 is expected to air in Spring 2025.
