Following the rumours that Ncuti Gatwa has already filmed his last scenes as the Fifteenth Doctor, bookies have started listing their favourites for taking over — and former Doctor, David Tennant, is top of the list!
Tennant, who of course played the Tenth Doctor then returned as the Fourteenth Doctor in 2023’s 60th anniversary specials, is reported as having odds of 4/6. David’s fellow Good Omens star, Michael Sheen (who previously was the voice of House in The Doctor’s Wife), has odds of 6/1.
Other names on the list are familiar for other reasons, namely their association with showrunner, Russell T Davies: those include Lydia West (4/1), T’Nia Miller (12/1), and Olly Alexander (6/1), all from Davies’ Years and Years; Omari Douglas (6/1) from RTD’s It’s a Sin; and Hugh Grant (12/1) from A Very British Scandal.
Fans will recall Miller from playing the General in Hell Bent, while Grant played a parody Doctor in The Curse of Fatal Death.
But it’s fair to argue that this is all a bit soon, considering Gatwa is still the Doctor and hasn’t been announced as leaving the role. And we don’t know Doctor Who‘s future beyond Series 15, considering it’s not been recommissioned yet.
On the other hand, as soon as an actor is cast as the Doctor, people start wondering who will replace them!
It’s all rather ridiculous in some ways, but also shows how important the longevity of the show is. It’s bigger than any actor, or even creative team.
It’s interesting, too, what might happen if the next Doctor isn’t revealed (if there is a regeneration), but Tennant’s Fourteenth Doctor is brought back, seeing as he’s still knocking around contemporary Earth with Donna Noble et al.
I guess we’ll find out.
