Following on from the revelation that Danny Dyer wants to be the next Doctor Who, the real next Doctor (some mistake surely?), Billie Piper, has been speaking to Florida Supercon 2015 about her future in the show.
A fan asked Billie about how her return to the show came about and what her reaction was to the idea. Billie commented:
“This is such a minefield – I have to really engage with how I answer this. All I can say is, I was approached very last-minute, and I can’t talk about in what capacity, but I found it very emotional to film and I think it’s a really great ending.
“As in, I just found it quite moving, and it was really fun to film because it had such a sort of cloak and dagger feeling about getting it made. So, yeah, I have to lie a lot about anything to do with Doctor Who, it seems.”
Billie’s comment that she was approached at the “very last-minute” chimes with revelations that there were substantial reshoots at the end of last season, presumably when it became clear that Disney was not going to green-light another series immediately (or indeed ever?). The DWC wonders how many fans and viewers agree with her that Ncuti Gatwa’s regeneration into Billie is “a really great ending”?
Billie’s comments continue to make it as clear as mud whether or not she is the new Doctor – even showrunner, Russell T Davies, said recently that he had “no idea” if she is – but BBC Studios CEO Tom Fussell has said he is “committed” to the series going forward.
The DWC is sure all fans of the programme will be greatly reassured by Ms Piper’s and Mr Fussell’s comments.
