You can now download The Green Dog, a short story starring Lucy Wilson, from Candy Jar Books — and it’s completely free!

Lucy is the granddaughter of Doctor Who legend, Brigadier Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart, and fashions herself as the Defender of Earth, carrying on his legacy. She’s accompanied by her friend, Hobo, and uses a time ring to ferry them around time and space.

In The Green Dog, they find themselves in 1386, on the run from a demon dog that stalks the forest of Ampleford. It’s (sort of) based on real events too… Oh, and it’s written by me — but don’t let that put you off!

Here’s what to expect:

‘The green dog has been stalking this parish for some eighty nights now, directly after the omen from the sky… ‘Orrible, it is: its eyes glow a verdant hue and its tooth-filled jaw snaps at the air. Its coat is as green as the knoll and its claws leave gigantic, ashen marks in the ground.’

It’s 1386 and the village of Ampleford is under threat from a terrifying hound that stalks the woods at night and has a taste for human flesh.

But George ‘Hobo’ Kostinen is having none of it. He’s never even heard of this ‘legendary’ beast, and anyway, he and his best mate, Lucy Wilson, have faced up to scarier things at home in Ogmore-by-Sea!

Yet it’s not long before they meet a man who made a deal with the devil and come face-to-snout with the green dog itself — a demon who is very, very hungry.

Inspired by the ghostly traditions of M. R. James, this eerie adventure blends mystery, suspense, and a touch of timey-wimey mischief into a complete tale for all our readers to enjoy.

The short story was sent out to regular Candy Jar readers as a Bank Holiday Monday surprise, while the publisher waits for a huge bevvy of titles — When I Say Run, Run!: The Patrick Troughton YearsThe Vaughn SupremacyThe Benton Files 7The New UnusualA Very Private Haunting, and The Man from Yesterday — to return from the printers.

And my upcoming full novel, The Lucy Wilson Mysteries: The Three Lucys, inspired by The Three Doctors, is due for release later this summer!

Don’t forget that you can download loads of goodies, including a previous short, 100 Things That Happened on Easter Island, via our “Free Stuff!” section: find it at the top of every page.
