Billie Piper, who played Ninth and Tenth Doctor companion Rose Tyler, has stated that she’s not playing the next lead in Doctor Who. That is, despite Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor regenerating into her at the end of The Reality War.
Speaking at For the Love of Fantasy & Sci-Fi, held at the Excel in London across 22nd and 23rd August 2026, Piper said:
“I am not the next Doctor. I am Rose Tyler in hiatus. Sorry, that’s a really cryptic answer, but because I’m not currently filming Doctor Who as the Doctor, I can’t lie and say otherwise. I’m sweating. I hate this.”

While suggesting that patience is the answer to our ills, Piper went on to say:
“It’s had a bit [of a] rough time lately and I think everyone just needs to chill out and wait for what comes from having space… and time.”
As far as we know, Doctor Who is going out to tender by the end of this year, meaning production companies can make their bids — both creative and financial — for the future of the show.
But we’ve heard next to nothing about the tendering process, and some corners of fandom are understandably getting itchy feet about it. It brings to mind the wilderness years of the 1990s, when the series disappeared off screen with 1989’s Survival, with only a brief respite in The TV Movie. But let’s not forget that fans kept it alive during that period, with multimedia adventures including novels and audio adventures.
We doubt Billie will be invited back to play the Sixteenth Doctor anyway; the next team will probably ignore the Reality War cliffhanger entirely…
