Fugitive Doctor to get more audio adventures next month

Following the multi-medium Circuit Breaker series made in collaboration with the BBC, there will be more adventures for the Fugitive Doctor this year through a new boxset that is just over a month away.

While much of Big Finish Productions’ upcoming audio dramas have been pushed back in a more spread out release schedule, with some stories announced over a year before they will be available to listen to, a third boxset in the Fugitive Doctor Adventures range has been snuck in at late notice.

The three-episode Running Wild boxset comes out in November and puts the Fugitive Doctor, played by Jo Martin, against a new incarnation of Cosmogon in addition to the Daleks.

In the range’s first series (released in 2025), Cosmogon was portrayed by Alice Krige and on behalf of Gallifrey’s High Council and Division (the secret Time Lord agency) she pursued its previous employee the Doctor.

The pair bounced off each other well, and now Martin is acting against Helen Lederer of Absolutely Fabulous fame. Lederer will be known by Doctor Who fans for her performance as Aunty Pat in the heart-breaking Death in Blackpool which opened the fourth series of Big Finish’s Eighth Doctor Adventures.

She describes her latest role as “a very interesting character, divided in her motives because she has to do the right thing” and “to veer who is she fighting for and against, but always with a slight exasperated humour”. That last point in particular suggests this incarnation will be notably different to Krige’s portrayal.

At present it’s unclear whether Running Wild is part of a structured second series in the Fugitive Doctor range. The cover art shows her in her series one outfit and the story descriptions indicate that this boxset will cover off significant developments. This will lead the Doctor to finding out the truth about her past and into hiding as seen in television episode Fugitive of the Judoon.

Tholos by Alex Hewitt

To uncover the secrets hidden within her mind, the Doctor voyages to the Temple of Lucidity – a great tholos floating through space – where a multicoloured tiger will teach her the secrets of the mystical dream-language of Oneira. But are the Arkiris Tiger’s motives pure? How has the Doctor’s dogged pursuer, Cosmogon, managed to follow her here? And why does Cosmo have a new face?

Scripture by Katharine Armitage

In the Scripture System, temporally unbound scribes chronicle the history of the universe: everything that has been, everything that is, and everything that will be. They’re the people with the answers and the Doctor has some very big questions for them. But so do the Daleks…

… and if the metal-plated conquerors from Skaro are ever going to dominate the universe, they’re going to have to do something about someone whose name begins with ‘D’.

Genesis of the Doctor by Rochana Patel

All stories have a beginning, but some are shrouded in myth and legend, and lost to the mists of time…

What you need is a living witness. And a mind probe. And the Doctor will soon have both…

This time, one way or another, she will have her answers – but is she ready for them?

Hewitt started off his career at Big Finish with minor acting roles, before debuting as a writer in the ninth volume of The New Adventures of Bernice Summerfield. They script edited and produced full-cast Circuit Breaker episode Full Circuit, then wrote and produced the Dan Starkey-performed two-story release Short Circuits. Both were released last month, so Hewitt is familiar with the Fugitive Doctor.

On script-editing duties for Running Wild is Robert Valentine. He has also previously penned stories in this range, and commented: “This new phase of the Fugitive Doctor’s adventures sees her taking a more aggressive course in her flight from Division. She may still be on the run, but she’s determined to find the mysterious ‘Man in the Grey Suit’, who may know the secrets of her predicament.”

He added

“I’m delighted to have the wonderful Helen Lederer join the series as Cosmogon’s second incarnation. The dogged Time Lord detective has been forcibly regenerated by Division in the hope she’ll play by their rules in their hunt for the Doctor, but this new Cosmo won’t bend so easily. Helen’s Cosmogon is funny, wild and in many ways more like the Doctor than the Doctor is, and I can’t wait for people to hear them together.”

The Fugitive Doctor: Running Wild is now available to pre-order for download and in a collector’s edition CD box set from the Big Finish website.
