Five and a half years isn’t too long to wait, right? David Tennant has said that he’d be up for another multi-Doctor Doctor Who anniversary appearance come the shows sixtieth anniversary bash in 2023.
Speaking at Wizard World Cleveland 2018 panel (via Radio Times) alongside former Who co-star Billie Piper, Tennant hinted that he’d be more than willing to don the Converse, pinstripe suit and hero coat of the Tenth Doctor once again if the call came in – and who isn’t going to make that call, right?
He said:
“They are exciting those episodes, but I think you have to be careful not to do them too often. They have to be a novelty. The 50th was a great thing to be a part of…When’s the 60th? Will we still be upright? Maybe then.”
So that raises the possibility of Tennant, Matt Smith’s Eleventh Doctor, Peter Capaldi’s Twelfth Doctor, Jodie Whittaker’s Thirteenth and perhaps even a Fourteenth Doctor uniting to fight another common enemy with designs on the universe – maybe they could convince Christopher Eccleston too? Stranger things have happened.
Tennant’s enthusiasm for the anniversary specials not only stems from the show’s history but also his own on-set experiences working on the fiftieth anniversary special, The Day of the Doctor.
He said:
“It could have been awful – really awful – because I didn’t really know Matt or Jenna [Coleman] and they could have been proprietorial – ‘get off my land!’,” Luckily they weren’t, they were very fun to be around and we had a really nice time.
“I wanted it to go on a bit longer. It was very short, sweet and lovely and nice to share the load a bit as well. I was thinking ‘oh, I’ve got a morning off today! That didn’t use to happen!”
So here’s hoping he’s still as enthusiastic come 2023.
Doctor Who returns this autumn on BBC One.
