It’s Free Comic Book Day, meaning thousands of fans worldwide will be heading to their local funny-strips store to grab a selection of titles specially-made for today. And there’s something there for Doctor Who fans too!
Because Titan Comics has produced a Thirteenth Doctor comic, written by Jody Houser with art by Rachael Stott (previously from The Tweflth Doctor series), and Tenth Doctor artists, Giorgia Sposito and Arianna Florean.
Here’s the blurb, which doesn’t tell you very much:
Jump aboard the TARDIS with Jodie Whittaker’s Doctor and her companions on Free Comic Book Day! A perfect introduction to the hit new series from Eisner-nominated comics writer Jody Houser, where readers leap through time and space in fun, fast-paced adventures!
Forbidden Planet also has an exclusive cover, which we’re sure will be slightly rarer than the average one; still, it’s rather a shame that a big-name store has an exclusive, on a day designed to bring trade to all comic shops including the independents.
A wide variety of titles are available free today, like FCBD Avengers #1,
FCBD Star Wars Adventures: Droid Hunters, FCBD The Tick, Pokémon: I Choose You, FCBD Vampirella – 50th Anniversary, and FCBD Spider-Man, a prelude to this summer’s Carnage event. See the full list at the Free Comic Book Day site.
If you do manage to visit your local store, don’t go crazy and get as many titles as possible. Despite the big publishers being the ones who can take such a hit to their finances, stores have to pay for the free comics. It’s an odd system, forcing even independent shops into coughing up cash but getting nothing in return (though obviously the hope is that it brings people in to see what else is on the shelves).
