Stephen Fry will star in the first episode of Doctor Who Series 12, although we don’t as yet know which part he’ll play. Fry was previously seen shooting for the serial at the Swansea Guildhall late last month.
This will be Fry’s first actual appearance in the series, although not his first connection with Doctor Who: aside from being name-checked in The Husbands of River Song, he also voiced the Minister of Chance in the animated webcast Death Comes to Time, released in 2001 on the BBC website and co-starring Sylvester McCoy’s Seventh Doctor and Sophie Aldred’s Ace.
He was further due to write an episode for Doctor Who Series 2 (2006), but amendments were needed on the script which Fry was too busy to do, meaning it was replaced by Fear Her.
The first story of Series 12 is likely to be a spy drama, directed by Jamie Stone, and co-starring Dominique Maher (The Devil Speaks) as Agent Browning, Darron Meyer (Deep State) as Seesay, and Ronan Summers (Welcome to Murdertown) as Rendition Man.
