It Looks Like UNIT Is Returning for Doctor Who’s 60th Anniversary — With a New Logo

Snippets of information continue to emerge from the shoot of Doctor Who’s 60th anniversary episodes, with eagle-eyed set watchers at the ready with their phones to catch a snap of whoever and whatever is being filming.

So far we’ve already seen fandom go into meltdown when images of the return of the Tenth Doctor, Donna, and other characters from that era were uploaded, followed by the rather more unexpected indications that aliens from an old Doctor Who Weekly comic strip were set for an on-screen appearance.

Things have quietened down a little since then, but there is news to share that another old favourite is making a comeback, with the appearance on location of soldiers and vehicles from UNIT, suggesting that the fighting force dedicated to protecting the Earth from alien invasion has been given a reprieve after having its funding pulled in the Thirteenth Doctor era.

It’s unsurprising that the return of Russell T Davies to Doctor Who should see him bringing UNIT back. They made several appearances during his first period showrunning the series, starting with Aliens of London/World War Three in Series 1, followed by The Christmas Invasion, The Sound of Drums/Last of the Time Lords, The Sontaran Strategem/The Poison Sky, Turn Left, Planet of the Dead, and The End of Time. And there’s something about the kind of action-packed, fast-moving stories he writes for the show that makes the trusty band of defenders a good fit.

Judging from images captured on location, the UNIT logo has been given an upgrade. Perhaps we’ll get a new Brigadier as well?
