For the First Time Ever, They’re Using Drones to Film TARDIS Scenes for Doctor Who Series 14

VFX Coordinator Siân Reynish promises Marvel-like, cutting edge technology is being used to film Doctor Who Series 14. And for the first time ever, that includes using drone cameras to record TARDIS scenes!

Reynish also implies that Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor is an energetic version of the Time Lord who darts around his trusty Space-Time Ship. Siân says:

“We’re using top-of-the-range technology, the kind that Marvel films use, to make Doctor Who in Wales, which I think is pretty spectacular. It means Doctor Who is at the forefront of pushing the boundaries.

“And in the Christmas Special, we’re shooting with drones on the set, which no one’s done before. Because of the way the Doctor races erratically around the TARDIS, it’s amazing to have those sorts of shots.”

We expect Gatwa to make his full debut as the Doctor in this year’s festive special, although we’ve seen his brief cameo of him in the Next Time trailer for the 60th anniversary episodes. We’re intrigued to see how Ncuti is involved in the celebrations, given that the focus will be on David Tennant as the Fourteenth Doctor.

But of course, we’re excited to hear more about Gatwa, and Reynish further teases:

“I think he’ll bring such a new dynamic. He’s young and fun. The crew say he’s up for anything, and I think he’ll really make it his own and not try to copy the mannerisms of anyone else. He’s really individual, and that’s what we want – a new new Doctor!”

We cannot wait.

But we’ll have to. Nonetheless, the Fifteenth Doctor will debut later this year on BBC1, with Series 14 coming in early 2024.
