Peter Hoar will be back to direct Block 2 of Doctor Who Series 15, the second full season of stories for Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor.
Hoar has only directed one episode of Doctor Who before, but man, it was beautifully done — that is, A Good Man Goes to War, the Series 6 mid-season finale, starring Matt Smith, Karen Gillan, and Arthur Darvill, as the Eleventh Doctor, Amy Pond, and Rory Williams respectively, and which revealed River Song’s (Alex Kingston) significance to the Doctor. Peter said this was a childhood dream, so it’s perhaps no surprise that he’s been welcomed back into the world of Doctor Who.
But since then, his CV has filled up with a number of incredible projects, including The Umbrella Academy, Altered Carbon, and The Last of Us. He’s worked on numerous Marvel projects like Daredevil, Cloak and Dagger, Runaways, Iron Fist, and The Defenders.
Most notably to Doctor Who fans, however, is his time directing It’s a Sin for Who showrunner, Russell T Davies, and producer, Phil Collinson.
Also confirmed by Doctor Who Magazine is Alex Pillai, who will be directing for Series 15, and whose previous credits include Da Vinci’s Demons, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Bridgerton, and Riverdale.
This feels like a great move by Davies, ushering in new directors who will bring a fresh verve and look to the show, and welcoming back familiar names who more than proved themselves on previous episodes.
Still, we have a while to wait to see their work: Series 15 won’t air until 2025 (though at least we have three 60th anniversary specials plus Series 14 to look forward to before then!).
