Catherine Tate, who played the Tenth Fourteenth Doctor companion, Donna Noble, has enthused about the music in Doctor Who, noting that listening to The Star Beast gave her a new appreciation of the show.
She said:
“When I saw the first cut of The Star Beast, with the first bits of post-production in it, and Murray’s arrangement of when Donna becomes the Doctor-Donna again, I genuinely thought it was astonishing. I was able to look at it outside of myself, and really experience it. When you go in and do ADR – Additional Dialogue Recording – it’s all completely flat because there are no sound effects on it. So, when I saw it, the music just elevated it so much. Obviously, it elevates everything – that’s why we’re here!”
Tate was speaking to Doctor Who Magazine as it went behind the scenes of this year’s Doctor Who Proms, a show Catherine presented and seemed to love every minute of.
The Star Beast was the first of three 60th anniversary specials, screened almost a year ago, and the first to see Murray Gold back providing the soundtrack, though he previously worked on Series 1 to 10, departing at the same time as then-showrunner, Steven Moffat.
And isn’t it weird that David Tennant and Catherine Tate returned almost a whole year ago, with The Star Beast debuting on 25th November 2023, two days after Doctor Who‘s 60th. They last appeared in The Giggle; however, the Fourteenth Doctor and Donna are still on Earth, so we might see them again sometime — we feel it’s unlikely for a little time though, considering the show instead needs to move forward with Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor.
