Two Fourth Doctor stories have vanished from the Whoniverse section of BBC iPlayer, leaving newer fans bereft of much-loved classic tales.
Terror of the Zygons and The Seeds of Doom have been taken down from the UK streaming service, apparently due to licensing issues — as both are written by the late Robert Banks Stewart, the agreement is presumably with his estate. Terror of the Zygons stars Tom Baker’s Fourth Doctor and Elisabeth Sladen as Sarah Jane, as does The Seeds of Doom, though the Zygons’ first appearance also features Ian Marter as Harry Sullivan and Nicholas Courtney as the Brigadier.
Both stories have been available on the Whoniverse section of iPlayer since being added for the franchise’s 60th anniversary.
An Unearthly Child also disappeared from iPlayer after the son of writer Anthony Coburn withdrew rights for the BBC to stream it.
All this goes to show how important physical media is. With streaming, you don’t own anything.
No, you can’t see them on iPlayer, but Terror of the Zygons and The Seeds of Doom are both available on DVD, as is An Unearthly Child, the latter in a boxset with The Daleks and The Edge of Destruction.
Of course, Terror of the Zygons has proved more important to Doctor Who lore since 2013 as the shape-changing aliens returned for The Day of the Doctor then its follow-up two-parter, The Zygon Invasion/ The Zygon Inversion.
It’ll be interesting to see what happens to these stories when the Blu-ray Collection sets are issued.
