Though unannounced by the BBC, the airtime for Joy to the World, this year’s Doctor Who festive special, has been revealed.
The episode, starring Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor and Nicola Coughlan as the titular Joy, is set to air on BBC1 and iPlayer at 5:10pm (GMT) on Christmas Day.
It has a runtime of one hour, meaning it’ll finish at about 6:10pm, leading into the Wallace and Gromit film, Vengeance Most Fowl, which we’re all also very excited about (and slightly terrified due to the return of Feathers McGraw). This was revealed to subscribers on Digiguide.
The story takes place at a Time Hotel, which allows its 41st century clientele to visit periods of history — where Joy finds herself confronted by the concierge: the Doctor!
It also stars Sherlock‘s Jonathan Aris as Melnak the Silurian and Joel Fry (Yesterday) as Trev, and is written by former showrunner, Steven Moffat — indeed, it’s the first 21st Century Doctor Who Christmas special not written by a current showrunner. This is apparently as Russell T Davies realised he was too busy to finish a script for this festive season, so asked the ever-reliable and talented Moffat to step in. And we’re glad he did, as Steven’s given us so many fantastic Christmas specials, including The Snowmen, Last Christmas, and my favourite, A Christmas Carol.
We expect Disney+ to make Joy to the World available to stream internationally on Christmas Day too, though we’ve heard they’re likely to ditch the midnight release. That’s just a rumour right now, so we shall see.
UPDATE: The BBC has now confirmed the airtime.
