A new report suggests that Doctor Who will continue for at least two more seasons, with or without Disney funding, but that it will likely take a short break before those series air.
The “news” comes from The Mirror, a newspaper with a source close to the production team it seems as many leaks have filtered through via the tabloid in the past, lending this some considerable credibility.
An unnamed source apparently told The Mirror:
“When Doctor Who began its partnership with Disney+, there was additional funding put in place. Doctor Who is an expensive show to make, with its effects budget taking up a significant part of the overall spend, so if Disney were to withdraw its funding, then there wouldn’t be as significant an impact on production as some fans may think. The TARDIS set is still standing in Cardiff, all ready to go on new adventures.”
This is roughly in line with what we’ve been hearing behind the scenes too.
It’s unknown whether Ncuti Gatwa, aka the Fifteenth Doctor, will continue with the show, though there are also unconfirmed reports of his regenerating at some point this year.
This all comes despite rumours that Doctor Who would be cancelled. Nonetheless, showrunner Russell T Davies is working on scripts for two more runs of stories, although these likely won’t air until at least 2027.
