Alex Kingston has floated some ideas about how her Doctor Who character, River Song, aka the Doctor’s wife, could come back to the show. And they’re not bad ideas!
River hasn’t been seen since the Twelfth Doctor (Peter Capaldi) era, but Alex has been voicing the archeologist for Big Finish audios. So River is still very much alive and well!
When asked about River coming back, Alex said:
“Of course I’m thinking ‘There’s still plenty of time for her to come back’ – how long’s a day on Darillium? [The answer, of course, is 24 years, according to The Husbands of River Song.]
“River could just be inside a computer; she could be a virus, go anywhere, hack into any computer anywhere in the universe, regenerate herself, 3D print herself? It’s endless – so just putting it out there!”
There’s potential in River being stuck in The Library (as per Forest of the Dead), but being able to spread to other computer systems… In fact, Big Finish saw that potential too and has given River an even greater extended life after death!
I love River, but I do think she’s better off away from the TV show for now; I don’t really recognise the current era as related in any way to River’s heyday in the Eleventh Doctor (Matt Smith) era — they’re like completely different shows. Nonetheless, you can see why Alex wants to play River again: she’s clearly had a ball playing her, and she speaks with great fondness for the character and for the series.
Never say never.
