Opening today (23rd April 2026) is a new exhibition all about the life and designs of Richard Croft, who worked on the costumes for many serials during the Fifth and Seventh Doctors’ eras. And it’s completely free to visit!
Richard Croft: Life & Designs opens at Royston Museum, and includes behind-the-scenes design work for not just Doctor Who, but a range of 1980s television — for instance, Blackadder, a sketch of which you can see in the promotional poster above! We’re pretty sure lots of Who fans also enjoy a good bit of Blackadder…
Croft worked on the costumes for Mawdryn Undead, Delta and the Bannermen, Dragonfire, The Happiness Patrol (a favourite of mine!), and Silver Nemesis (for which Richard also appeared in the ‘Making Of’ documentary). The free exhibition includes many designs from these episodes.
If you can’t make it to Royston, Hertfordshire, the exhibition will also be available to view online at a later date.
The Museum’s events page says:
Dedicated to costume from an early age, Richard Croft created a dazzling wardrobe for the BBC in the 80’s. Working on popular shows, from science fiction to Christmas specials. See his designs up close and discover the man behind the limelight.
The exhibition is open during the Museum’s normal opening hours (Thursday to Sunday, 10am to 4pm), and admission is free.
It’s quite unusual to get such a glimpse behind the cameras to look at costume designs, so this is a rare treat — plus, you can support a Museum putting on such a cool event, so we’re sure it’ll be a worthwhile trip!
Richard Croft: Life & Designs runs at Royston Museum from 23rd April to 12th July 2026.
