Ncuti Gatwa Jokes About Doctor Who’s Low Ratings and Crying All the Time on Saturday Night Live UK

Fifteenth Doctor actor, Ncuti Gatwa, hosted Saturday Night Live UK earlier this week and poked fun at his tenure in Doctor Who.

It’s customary for episodes to open with a special monologue from the guest host, and Gatwa’s included a number of jibes about playing the Doctor. He said:

“I am so lucky. I have had so many fantastic roles in my career. Millions of you watched me as Eric in Sex Education. And then about 12 of you watched me in Doctor Who. Hey, maybe that’s why I kept crying.

“Joking aside, it was genuinely a magical role. In fact, it was the first time my parents were truly proud of my career. When I told them I got the part, they said, ‘Finally, a doctor in the family.'”

Sadly, Doctor Who Series 15 was met with some brutal overnight and accumulated figures, coming in with some all-time lows, with some episodes registering fewer than 3 million viewers, even after consumption on multiple devices were factored in. Nonetheless, it’s good to see Gatwa is not only aware of that but that he can joke about it (especially as Doctor Who‘s legacy is a lot more important than episode-by-episode ratings.

Of course, he is basically on Saturday Night Live UK to joke around, so it’s no surpise.

He also joked about Billie Piper’s appearance at the end of The Reality War, saying:

“And even though I have since regenerated into Billie Piper, I don’t understand it either. I still love Doctor Who, and I got to meet so many crazy characters.”

You’re not alone, Ncuti…
