Doctor Who showrunner, Russell T Davies, has caused a stir (he does that) by suggesting he won’t be filming “anything until next year”, but does that include Doctor Who?
The writer appeared on James O’Brien’s Full Disclosure podcast, and when asked what he’s doing next, Davies admitted:
“I don’t actually know… I’m having a nice time. I’m kind of not rushing to write the next thing. I’m going to start now. The Tip Toe, we finished work on that next week and I’ll start right on the next one. So, that script will take a few months then we’ll start talking to people about it. So I won’t be back filming anything until next year, really.”
This lends some credence to the rumours that the upcoming Doctor Who Christmas special, which would likely tidy up the ending of The Reality War, won’t be shown over the festivities and has instead been either delayed or cancelled entirely. After all, a Christmas special destined for this year… would need to be filmed this year!
However, this might not be the case. Davies might solely be talking about projects he’s not written yet (the special has apparently been scripted), or he could be talking about non-Who projects only.
CultBox raises the interesting suggestion that he may not be Executive Producer anymore, so wouldn’t be involved in filming.
Nonetheless, it’s a bit strange that he doesn’t mention Doctor Who at all. It’s like the sin of omission.
It’s also bizarre that, after the rumours that Doctor Who has been cancelled or delayed began circulating, the Radio Times reached out to the BBC, but the corporation “declined to comment”.
