In response to a question about whether there’s going to be an announcement soon about who the next Doctor in Doctor Who will be, showrunner Russell T Davies has said that something will be revealed very soon.
While appearing on Radio 2, Davies was asked if we’ll get an announcement about a new Doctor anytime soon, and he replied:
“You will get an announcement. There’s a press release lumbering through the BBC, which, as you know, is like the Jurassic period and 57 people have to sign off on every single word. I promise you in about a week, two weeks, there will be some sort of press release, and yet I can hear the gears slowing down even as I say that. You know this place!”
If there is a press release doing the rounds at the BBC… well, we expect it to leak within 24 hours! That’s what happened when, for instance, Matt Smith revealed he was leaving Doctor Who; these things don’t tend to stay private for very long.
This follows a lot of speculation about the future of the series: recently, it was rumoured that the planned Christmas special had been scrapped or delayed, and the BBC didn’t comment on it — not even a dismissal or to note that they don’t comment on speculation.
It’s now a year since Billie Piper seemingly debuted as the Sixteenth Doctor at the end of The Reality War, and no one appears to know whether she even is the Doctor. So some clarification from the BBC, about the Doctor, about the next episode, about what lies ahead at all, would be greatly appreciated…
