Twelfth Doctor actor, Peter Capaldi, is sure that Doctor Who will be back on our screens at some point, but once it does, it might look a bit different.
After the announcement that Russell T Davies has left the post of showrunner and Doctor Who is being put out to tender, there was some panic about the programme being potentially cancelled. However, Capaldi says he think the show “will be the same but different” after it returns — whenever that may be.
Helping to ease some fans’ minds, Capaldi said:
“Doctor Who has been great to Russell, and it has been great to everybody who’s worked any of it, and it will continue to be great. It’s not going anywhere.
“Maybe it will disappear for a while in time and space, that’s what the Doctor does.”
It does seem likely the series won’t be on TV for a few years as things do appear to be up in the air. And he’s right, of course: whichever production team takes on the challenge, they’ll want to make it different to the Fifteenth Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) era.
It might go back to basics. Just a runaway Time Lord travelling through time and space with a (probably) human companion or two! That might be best, in truth.
It’s unlikely to address some of the lingering questions of Gatwa’s era. But hey, we’ve got quite some time to speculate as the BBC hasn’t even announced the tendering process guidelines yet.
Let’s trust Capaldi anyway: Doctor Who will return!
