Jodie Whittaker: “I Will Love Doctor Who Until the Day I Die”

Thirteenth Doctor actress, Jodie Whittaker, has reaffirmed that she’d return to Doctor Who any time — simply because she loves it!

Whittaker said:

“I have never ever had to hide my absolute love for Doctor Who and I have said in every single interview that was ever asked, I would always say yes [to returning] and everyone knows that is what I will feel; I will love Doctor Who until the day I die.

“I think everything to do with Doctor Who is a surprise: who the next Doctor is, who the companions are — there’s always a surprise coming.”

In these uncertain times, what with the programme being on hiatus while the BBC initiates the tender process (meaning other production teams will have the chance to pitch their vision of the show and the BBC decides who gets to realise it), it’s lovely to hear someone so closely associated with the franchise openly speak out about how much she adores it.

Currently, of course, you can tune into more adventures with the Thirteenth Doctor, joined by Mandip Gill as Yasmin Khan, for Big Finish’s The Thirteenth Doctor Adventures.

The element of surprise is an interesting one to examine. Doctor Who has had some doozies in the past: the Cybermen turning up in Earthshock, Professor Yana regenerating into the Master in Utopia, Mr Razor revealing his true identity in World Enough and Time, Ncuti Gatwa regenerating into Billie Piper in The Reality War… Yes, well, not all surprises are good ones. But many are.

The show shouldn’t rely on surprises, however. Yet good storytelling does often rely on suspense that gives way to surprise — think of smaller surprises that carry narratives.

Someone should really write a thesis. But ah, it’s just too hot today.
