Electric Entertainment, headed by Dean Devlin, has expressed an interest in producing Doctor Who alongside the BBC, with rumours that the company are in talks to take on the sci-fi franchise.

Devlin is a writer, director, and producer, and his independent studio is based in Los Angeles, California, and co-run by Rachel Olschan-Wilson and Marc Roskin. The firm has an impressive portfolio, boasting a number of sci-fi and adventure franchises already, including The Librarians, The Ark (not the First Doctor story!), and Bad Samaritan (starring David Tennant). Devlin himself worked as a producer and co-writer on films such as Stargate and Independence Day.

In a rather horrible AI video which sees Devlin explore a ramshackle of the Eleventh and Twelfth Doctor’s TARDIS console room, before being joined by uncanny valley versions of several 21st Century Doctors, Electric Entertainment questioned fans:

“So BBC is putting Doctor Who out to tender. Do you think they should partner with us at Electric Entertainment?”

The video concludes with him saying:

“Bring it on.”

The Times is reporting that Devlin is in talks with the BBC, though as the tender process has yet to be announced, we’re not sure this is true.

The newspaper is also reporting, perhaps based on his starring in Bad Samaritan, that Devlin wants Tennant to return to Doctor Who. Which would probably be a terrible idea.

Nonetheless, Dean is a big name and he would surely relaunch Who to considerable success. The DWC’s very own Julie previously mooted the possibility when arguing that he should be showrunner:

“Leverage: Redemption and Librarians: The Next Chapter are excellent examples of something that’s neither a complete reboot nor an alternate continuity, but a continuation of an old story with new characters. Redemption is a mild example, featuring all but one of the original cast and adding two new protagonists. The new characters add a fresh perspective and different skills without dissing the original cast. The Next Chapter, on the other hand, has a completely new cast, with one of the original characters kickstarting the plot and then ‘handing off’ the storyline.”
