The latest installment in the ongoing Myth Makers DVD collection features an extensive interview with Colin Howard, best known for painting many Doctor Who VHS covers during the 1990s.
Colin’s career, of course, has also included art for Doctor Who Magazine, Doctor Who Classic Comics, the BBC novels in the 1990s and 2000s, animations like The Evil of the Daleks, and plenty more besides. And I should know because not only did he create the cover for my book, Companions: More Than 60 Years of Doctor Who Assistants, but I’ve also edited two volumes of his artbooks, Timeslides!
The Myth Makers DVDs are long interviews with important folk from behind the scenes on Doctor Who, and this latest release showcases Colin and his incredible art, as interviewed by his friend and creator of the Museum of Classic Sci-Fi, Neil Cole!
Neil says:
“To ‘get the gig’ to interview and spend a day with Colin Howard was a blessing, and one I will always cherish. I always felt a distant kinship with Colin – even before we met…. our lives share so many similarities! I simply can’t wait to get the chance to see the finished DVD. I also can’t wait to see how Rob Thrush managed to edit a full day of Colin and I talking everything from comic strips, desperate motorcycling, metal and of course…. Doctor Who!”
Here’s what to expect:
During a career spanning more than 35 years, Colin Howard has become one of the most recognisable artists associated with Doctor Who publishing and home-video artwork. Colin has created artwork for many Doctor Who products, including novels, magazines, comics, calendars, VHSs, DVDs, Blu-rays, and animated reconstructions!
He’s also produced artwork for Red Dwarf and Quantum Leap. His portfolio reflects a lifelong interest in science fiction and popular culture.
In this inspiring Myth Makers, Colin also speaks openly and bravely to Neil Cole about living with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), a condition that has ultimately led him to retire … but that hasn’t affected his irrepressible good nature!
Colin is a really lovely chap and it’s been a pleasure to edit his two Timeslides collections — working alongside him means I’ve heard lots of interesting stories about Doctor Who, the world of publishing, and art. What’s more, he’s become a good friend, so I feel very lucky.
You can order this Myth Makers DVD from Time Travel TV; and Timeslides II is available to pre-order now from Candy Jar Books (as is the first volume of Timeslides, in case you missed it).
