Roughly 4 years after the BBC asked fans to “watch this space”, we’ve got a similar teaser which promises something exciting coming on 23rd November 2019, aka. Doctor Who Day. Naturally, many have concluded that this is when we’ll finally see the trailer for Doctor Who Series 12. Almost the entire crew at the DWC concur, except Frank who’s so enamoured with the idea, he’s tried to escape via the minefield. We’re reassembling him now. Please do not throw his hands at me.
The safe assumption is that this will be a trailer plus an expected transmission date, i.e. “Doctor Who will be back in January” or something similar. Alternatively, it might be an announcement about the long-mooted Christmas special: we know something “special” has been filmed, but we don’t know when it’ll air. Plenty have speculated that this will air on New Year’s Day, exactly a year since the previous episode, Resolution.
Series 12 stars Jodie Whittaker as the Thirteenth Doctor, Mandip Gill as Yasmin Khan, Tosin Cole as Ryan Sincliar, and Bradley Walsh as Graham O’Brien. Chris Chibnall is the series’ showrunner, with further writers still to be revealed.
Mulling it over, it should’ve been obvious to us that a teaser would arrive on Doctor Who Day; alas, it only just hit home. Fortunately, other news outlets seem to have overlooked this too.
We’re sure this is all part of the typical publicity cycle, generating interest and anticipation before the trailer “drops” (as the yoofs say). But bear in mind that the “watch this space” silhouette tweet was posted on 31st October, and that it was essentially an announcement for an announcement, we can’t help but roll our eyes a tad. (I do rather like the spectrum/rainbow effect invoking the Doctor’s t-shirt though – that’s neat.)
Nonetheless, new Doctor Who is coming! Get out the bunting! Look – Frank’s beside himself!
