Ready to play a Doctor Who trading card game? Wizards of the Coast has announced that it’s making a Doctor Who crossover with the popular Magic: The Gathering, the tabletop and digital collectible card game first released in 1993.
Magic will include new cards and four unique commander decks featuring Doctor Who characters during late 2023.
And while that will surely excite a lot of card game fans, we should all be looking forward to the series, as it means we’re getting gorgeous new paintings featuring key moments and character from our favourite show. So far, Wizards has unveiled pictures featuring scenes from The Day of the Doctor, The Pandorica Opens, and Fugitive of the Judoon, as well as illustrations of the Fourth Doctor proffering some jelly babies and the TARDIS on a bright alien landscape.
There will be four different Doctor Who commander decks, each with at least some brand new cards depicting characters or events from the show, in line with similar Magic crossovers including Lord of the Rings, Street Fighter, and Fortnite. There will also be Collector Boosters to accompany these, potentially with further new art and foil variants.
If this all goes over your head, you’re not the only one, but at least it’ll be cool seeing fresh artworks in a new style — and they’re sure to be hugely collectible.
The sets are due to be released sometime in Q3 of 2023… so will surely be timed to coincide with Doctor Who‘s 60th anniversary.
