Showrunner, Russell T Davies, has revealed that the first call he made after getting the job was to outgoing showrunner, Chris Chibnall, to invite him back!
Davies revealed this after confirming that another former showrunner, Steven Moffat, is indeed coming back to write an episode of Doctor Who Series 14. Russell said:
“Steven was the second phonecall I made, after getting the old job back. The first was Chris Chibnall, but he sent love and kisses and RAN! Off to write his new novel!”
That novel is Death At The White Hart, due out in January 2025.
Chibnall was showrunner throughout the Thirteenth Doctor (Jodie Whittaker) era, helming Series 11, 12, and 13. And while his time as executive producer and lead writer proved controversial, less controversial were his episodes outside of his time as showrunner, i.e. 42 under Davies, and, for Moffat, The Hungry Earth/ Cold Blood, Dinosaurs on a Spaceship, and The Power of Three.
Moffat, meanwhile, was showrunner for Series 5 to 10, introducing us to the Eleventh and Twelfth Doctors, as well as the War Doctor, played respectively by Matt Smith, Peter Capaldi, and John Hurt. Steven has scripted an episode for Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor.
So yes, we expect a whole array of new writers for these upcoming seasons, but it’s good to hear that Davies has approached previous writers to work on the show again too.
Who else would you like to see back? Jamie Mathieson? Rob Shearman? Rona Munro? Or someone else?
