Recently announced at the San Diego Comic Con in America, Doctor Who and Star Trek will crossover in video game form.
Available on smartphones, Doctor Who’s Lost in Time and Star Trek: Lower Decks – The Badgey Directive will feature characters from both franchises as announced at the Intergalactic Friendship Day Panel, which saw showrunner Russell T Davies chatting with Star Trek head honcho, Alex Kurtzman.
Both showrunners had a lot of praise for each other’s work and indeed in this latest series of Doctor Who, there have been a few explicit references to Trek, most notably in Space Babies which saw Ruby Sunday mention the crew, the Doctor saying that they should visit them, and the space station feeling a lot like something from Star Trek with turbo lifts.
In the story split between both games, players will experience the same story but told from two different perspectives: a mysterious ripple in space and time flings the Doctor aboard the U.S.S. Cerritos, the ship from Lower Decks, while Ensign Boimler and Ensign Beckett Mariner find themselves flung into the Doctor Who universe. And with the ripple threatening all of existence, the Doctor must team up with the remaining crew of the Cerritos while Boimler and Mariner team up with River Song and other characters from the Whoniverse. Across both games, the characters must rush to repair the ripple and get themselves back to their own universes.
The game sounds very exciting and with the popular animated series Lower Decks coming to an end with its fifth season, it’s a great opportunity to see these characters and introduce them to people who have never seen the series before. And the same goes for Doctor Who — introducing the characters in our favourite series to more new fans.
With the recent involvement from Disney, it seems that the BBC and Bad Wolf Studios aren’t afraid to get American companies involved in the show, and it’s not just the Lower Decks characters involved — for fans of older Trek, we’ve even got scenes where Riker and Troi from The Next Generation meet the Daleks. Very exciting indeed!
The limited time crossover began on 1st August 2024.
