Millie Gibson, who plays companion Ruby Sunday, has revealed that Jonah Hauer-King will star alongside her and Fifteenth Doctor actor, Ncuti Gatwa, in the next series of Doctor Who.
Hauer-King is best known for playing the lead in The Tattooist of Auschwitz, as well as Prince Eric in the live-action remake of The Little Mermaid.
Gibson said:
“It’s the rare case where you see the companion after the Doctor. It’s never been explored before, and I think it’s such a beautiful and clever thing to do. Can you imagine traveling the world with the Doctor and then seeing how they cope with it after when your life just goes back to normal?
“It was the weirdest feeling. But yeah, I’m joined by the beautiful Jonah Hauer-King on her journey. He’s a very, very interesting character, and he makes the show even more magical. So, I’m very excited to see what he’s like.”
(Fans will note that, yes, we have explored what happens to companions after they leave the Doctor before. Amy and Rory’s adventures post-Doctor were sort of explored in Series 7; we saw Martha Jones the following season after her departure in Series 3; Donna Noble was seen a few times since departing the TARDIS; and of course, Sarah Jane’s story was extensively featured in Doctor Who itself and spin-off programme, The Sarah Jane Adventures. But that’s beside the point, which is…)
The BBC hasn’t confirmed who Hauer-King is playing in Doctor Who Series 15, but it’s expected to be a recurring role, and potentially as Ruby’s boyfriend.
We shall find out next year, when Doctor Who returns to TV!
