If you order Companions: More Than 60 Years of Doctor Who Assistants before Monday (13th January 2025), you can save £5, bringing the £20 RRP down to £15, directly from publisher, Candy Jar Books.

What’s more, this new edition is now a whopping 700 pages, covering every companion from 1963 to 2024. It even brings us up to date, looking at the latest Doctor Who Christmas special, Joy to the World.

Companions: More Than 60 Years of Doctor Who Assistants is an updated and vastly expanded tome, based on 2013’s Companions by Andy Frankham-Allen. Everything has been revised and added to, with a huge number of companions featured — in fact, every companion, including TV ones like Susan, Sarah Jane Smith, Ace, Rose Tyler, Amy Pond and Rory Williams, Graham O’Brien, and Ruby Sunday; prose companions like Cinder, Chris Cwej, and Anji Kapoor; comic friends like Kroton, Izzy Sinclair, Majenta Pryce, Alice Obiefune, and Fey Truscott-Sade; and audio assistants like Brooke, Charley Pollard, Constance Clarke, Hex, Anya Kingdom, and Mrs Wibbsey.

While the original book was just over 300 pages long, this new edition is 700 pages, the longest Candy Jar has ever produced. Oh, and I wrote the update, so if you like the Doctor Who Companion, you should like this too!

Here’s the blurb:

Doctor Who was never really about the Doctor. This is the story of the Time Lord’s companions – friends through all of time and space.

Discover the journeys of every one of the Doctor’s assistants, from Susan, Ian Chesterton, and Barbara Wright, to Fifteenth Doctor companion, Ruby Sunday, including their adventures off-screen – in novels, comics and audio.

Companions: More Than Sixty Years of Doctor Who Assistants is an in-depth account of each companion, examining their arcs, significance in the TV series, and how they traversed different times, places and mediums. Relive their travels on television. Learn what companions did after they left the TARDIS. And meet the Doctor’s wider network of friends, from Evelyn Smythe to Liv Chenka, Professor Bernice Summerfield to the Doctor’s grandchildren John and Gillian.

See the universe anew through their eyes.
