Former showrunner, Steven Moffat, has once more been asked if he’d come back to write more Doctor Who, and it seems the jury is still out.
Despite him previously hinting that Joy to the World might be his last script for the programme, Moffat said:
“Have I got any more ideas? Well, I mean, there’s an awful lot of scripts I’ve written, so I don’t honestly know if I’ve got any more ideas, and I don’t know if they’ll want me, and I don’t know what my schedule will be… So I don’t know. I’m not against it, but I’m not especially saying it’s gonna happen. I’m not even lying anymore!”
So basically, no one knows, including Moffat himself. He’s seemingly not back for Series 15 at any rate, as the other writers, in addition to current showrunner, Russell T Davies, have been confirmed and include Kerblam! scribe, Pete McTighe.
Nonetheless, we have to remain skeptical about the notion of Steven not having more ideas. He’s always had fantastic ideas in abundance — look at his previous episodes, including The Empty Child/ The Doctor Dances, The Eleventh Hour, A Christmas Carol, Let’s Kill Hitler, Heaven Sent, Extremis, and Boom; apart from a fascination with time, there’s very little similar about them all.
And I’m a big fan of Moffat, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed. Either way, he’s contributed a huge amount to the show, and for that at least, we should be very grateful, regardless of whether he comes back for more or not.
