Jo Martin, who plays the so-called “Fugitive Doctor”, a forgotten incarnation of the Time Lord, says she thinks Doctor Who will continue for a very long time as the “stories are never going to end”.
While reflecting on the future of the show, Martin says:
“I’m hoping that Doctor Who carries on, because it has been [going for] decade upon decade, with generations upon generations growing up on this show. It is a way of life and I think it will be here long after we are gone.”
This discussion comes after the announcement that this year’s Christmas special has been cancelled and the series is being put out to tender — meaning new production teams can pitch to take on the programme. As yet, details of the tender process have yet to be revealed, but we expect them to be announced shortly…
Jo Martin debuted as part of the “Timeless Child” arc during the Jodie Whittaker era, though she’s since popped up in The Story & the Engine under Ncuti Gatwa’s reign as the Fifteenth Doctor.
So what does Jo think the future has in store for Doctor Who? She goes on:
“I think we should be talking to the fans more, because they know this genre so well. They may have the best ideas for its future… As I’ve said before, long may it reign. The stories are endless. The stories are never going to end. Whovians, fans, and their children and their children’s children will be watching this show, and hopefully seeing holograms of me when I’m gone!”
The longevity of the show really is one of its biggest strengths, so the thought that it’ll continue long into the future is a wonderful one.
Martin’s secret incarnation of the Doctor returns this summer with the Circuit Breaker multimedia arc that includes audio, comics, and novels.
