Sir Sherlock, the audio drama series starring the incomparable Tom Baker, has found its Mrs Hudson – and it’s June Hudson, best known as the BBC costume designer responsible for the Fourth Doctor’s burgundy outfit!
Set to lend her voice to the short story Martha’s Missive on the upcoming Sir Sherlock: The Parting Shot collection, June Hudson will be joining Sophie Aldred and John Leeson on the release. As the campaign has surpassed its target, there is a very strong chance this will happen.
About ‘Martha’s Missive’
The story synopsis reads:
Bedridden in a cosy cottage deep in the wilds of Scotland, Mrs. Hudson decides she must write to Sir Sherlock, after reading about his Knighthood and new adventures, highlighted in the newspapers.
With her grandniece, Elsie, by her bedside, she dictates a letter full of vivid and emotional memories to her former employer. It’s also a reply to a request that Sir Sherlock sent her. It’s one last missive for her most famous resident of 221B Baker Street.
Says June:
“After all these years, to be playing in an audio with Tom Baker! That’s wonderful, exciting and thrilling. I really felt like I was part of the Sir Sherlock world, bringing Mrs. Hudson to life.”
“I thought it was a perfect encapsulation of Mrs. Hudson in her later life. Even though it’s a short
script, you get such an idea of how much she loved being part of that previous life; always
being there for him, telling him off if necessary, and making sure he ate his breakfast – like a
Mother Hen.”
Dharma Jones also appears in the two-hander, playing Elise, Mrs Hudson’s grandniece.
The short is co-directed by Alex Moore, along with scriptwriter Barnaby Eaton-Jones, who says:
“It was a joy to have June Hudson on board. She just seemed to get
the script I wrote instantly and gave such an emotional and nuanced performance […] something very sweet and truthful. I hope regular supporters of the Sir Sherlock series from AUK Studios will enjoy this little extra.”
