Though not announced by the BBC just yet, it seems that two more missing Doctor Who stories will be animated for DVD and Blu-ray, presumably for release sometime in 2021 or early 2022.
So which lost stories will be animated next? It won’t come as a massive shock that we seemingly have The Evil of the Daleks and The Abominable Snowmen on the horizon!
This comes from the latest issue of The Doctor Who Figurine Collection, which focuses on the Chameleons from Fury from the Deep. Inside the accompanying magazine, a section entitled “Animation Evolution” reports:
“The animators’ work isn’t over, with plans underway to see the completion of The Web of Fear (1968), which is still missing Episode 3, as well as animating the whole of The Evil of the Daleks (1967) and The Abominable Snowmen (1967).”
This is certainly not a confirmation, but it’s as near as we’re going to get until BBC Studios announces its upcoming slate.
The Evil of the Daleks is no great shock – the Daleks always sell well and are comparatively easy to animate – and The Abominable Snowmen, being the first serial with the Great Intelligence and the Yeti, is a neat addition to the range, tying into the animated version of The Web of Fear (for which only one episode, its iconic third which introduced Colonel Lethbridge-Stewart to Doctor Who, is missing).
The Web of Fear is next to come to DVD and Blu-ray, but an actual release date is yet to be announced. It will use the surviving audio-only recordings, while the title further includes the story’s 5 surviving episodes.
The Doctor Who Figurine Collection #193 is out now.
