Eleventh Doctor era fans can celebrate as Arthur Darvill will return as Rory Williams in an upcoming audio boxset also starring Alex Kingston as his on-screen daughter, River Song!
The Death and Life of River Song: River and Rory is due for release in January 2027, and includes four stories: Bog Man by Lizzie Hopley, Life Lessons by Karissa Hamilton-Bannis, A Most Dangerous Game by Robert Valentine, and The Tashpa Stone by Shai Hussain and John Dorney. The episodes are set between The Wedding of River Song and Asylum of the Daleks, during which time River learns her mother and father have separated and Rory is living with a friend in Birmingham.
Rather excitingly, this is the first time that Kingston and Darvill have starred together since 2012’s The Angels Take Manhattan, the last on-screen episode to feature Rory and Amy Pond (Karen Gillan).
Here’s the synopsis:
Just as Rory Williams is trying to get his life in order… his daughter crashes back into it! And River always brings trouble… From the busy city to the peace of Leadworth, someone is on her trail. And before long, River gives Rory a taste of her own lifestyle as they take a leap into time and space…
Producer David Richardson:
“I make no secret of the fact that I believe the Eleventh Doctor, Amy, Rory and River are one of the greatest teams ever to have graced Doctor Who. It’s a thrill to be able to take a deep dive back into that era, reuniting Alex and Arthur for new stories with their much-loved characters.
“We’ve been trying to make this happen for some time – storylining began back in 2020! – but the stars have aligned and River and Rory was recorded over four joyful days in May.”
As anyone who knows me will know, I’m a huge fan of the Eleventh Doctor era, so this is truly wonderful news.
The Death and Life of River Song: River and Rory is available to pre-order now from Big Finish.
