The iconic blue Police Box (with a giant raspberry on top) helped to ‘regenerate’ presenter ‘Dr Prue’ Leith into Nigella Lawson to launch the 2026 series of The Great British Bake Off.
The Great British Bake Off (GBBO) may not have a huge crossover audience with Doctor Who. Although you never know, two of its leading actors are, of course, Bakers. But these two seminal series came together last night to launch the latest series of GBBO and introduce its new presenter, Nigella Lawson.
For those of you who are a little out of touch, the Bake Off is a televised amateur baking competition where a group of home bakers face weekly themed signature, technical, and showstopper challenges inside a tent until one winner is declared. Each episode begins with a comedy sketch (of varying degrees of hilarity), featuring the show’s presenters and judges. In this instance, presenters Noel Fielding and Alison Hammond, alongside judge Paul Hollywood, outgoing judge Prue Leith and incoming judge Nigella Lawson.
In case you missed it, here’s how the Bake Off series began:
Prue: Well, I guess this is goodbye.
Alison: I can’t believe you’re leaving. It feels like the end of an era.
Paul: Time to turn over a new leaf.
Noel: It’s Prue Leith, actually.
Alison: Goodbye, Prue. We’ll miss you.
Noel: Good luck with the regeneration, yeah?
Alison: Regeneration?
(A TARDIS materialises [although not with the traditional sound], its sign says ‘Proving Box’ rather than ‘Police Box’, and there’s a giant raspberry instead of the flashing light.)
Noel: Yeah, every few years, we get a new Dr Prue. Good luck, Prue.
(Prue walks towards the TARDIS)
Paul: Don’t worry, Prue, there’s a bar in the back.
Prue: Oh good.
Alison: We’ll never forget you, Prue.
Paul: See you, Prue.
Noel. Love you.
(The TARDIS starts smoking, a ‘ping’ indicates it’s finished baking, then Nigella walks out.)
Noel: Wow, it’s Nigella.
Alison: Oh wow. I’m a massive fan. How’d you fancy being the new judge?
Nigella: What does it involve?
Alison: Eating loads of cake!
Paul: Hanging out with me.
Noel: Alright Paul, don’t put her off.
Nigella: You know, it is the absolute dream. I am in.
Alison: Yes! Oh, welcome to the family, Nigella. You’re gonna love it.
Nigella (to camera): Welcome to the Great British Bake Off!
Alison: I’ve got goosepimples!

Although a blip in Doctor Who history, this tells us about the continuing important cultural relevance of iconic aspects of the series. When people talk of the series being ‘dead’ and ‘cancelled’, they fail to understand how deeply embedded the Doctor, the TARDIS, the Daleks and the many other elements that are part of our everyday references. How many buildings have you entered that people have described as being ‘a bit of a TARDIS’?
Apart from the fact that there will be a new series, Doctor Who lives on in our imagination, our interactions and our shared culture. Like the Doctor, it will live forever (barring accidents).
Competitive Cakes?
Of course, this is the second appearance of the TARDIS in a major event this year. At the Opening Ceremony of the 2026 Commonwealth Games on July 23, 2026, in Glasgow’s, the TARDIS appeared in a televised sketch co-piloted across Scottish landmarks by Sir Chris Hoy and Greg McHugh – featuring a cameo by Sylvester McCoy – before materialising onstage, where its doors opened to reveal King Charles III and Queen Camilla stepping out onto the arena floor to open the Games. They’re probably still enjoying a drink at the bar with Prue.
Back in the dim and distant 1980s, it was de rigueur for the TARDIS to materialise on Wogan, Pebble Mill, Breakfast Time or the Generation Game to herald the appearance of a Doctor Who actor or Who-themed comedy sketch. Long may the tradition continue. Plus it’s always a thrill when little bits of Who spilt out into the real world.
